15 CENTRAL PARK WEST

This 2,400 square foot apartment is located in the highly acclaimed Robert Stern designed building, 15 CPW, constructed in 2007. Our client who is Belgian, purchased the apartment as her New York Pied-a-terre for use when she travels to visit her son and his family. In conjunction with her Belgian architect, Claire Bataille, our goal was to create a modern turn key home that was both comfortable and elegant.

With luxuriously proportioned rooms on the 33rd floor,
large scale windows provide expansive views of Central Park. The most important room in the apartment is the living room. Our client is both an avid art collection and a musician. She often hosts parties where she and others will perform piano recitals. We decided to design the living room as a sort of salon where art was displayed and music enjoyed. Spare furnishings provide the flexibility for these occasions. Although spare in number, each piece of furniture made up for it in terms of design. Three sculptural Saarinen womb chairs in brightly colored fabrics are the focus of the room and share an artful quality with the paintings on the walls. A custom mohair rug by Groundplans provides a luxurious soft texture next to the piano’s high lacquer finish. A custom white paint was developed for the walls. The goal was to create a white that was both bright and warm at the same time. It has since become our go to white for many of our projects.

So public spaces are more active and reflect our clients creative side and the private spaces are designed more minimally, in neutral tones to provide a sense of serenity in an otherwise hectic city. Between the art on the walls and the amazing views, we chose to create interiors that would not compete with their surroundings but rather complement them.
